World Environment Day is celebrated across the world on June 5th of every year. Since the UN assembly made it an official day in 1972 it has grown it's following from the hundreds into the millions. Since the seventies, WED has been hosted in many different countries across the world ranging from the USA, Bangladesh, Istanbul to Thailand, and many many more.
Each year the theme of this day changes. Originally, back in 1974 it started with 'Only One Earth' and since has changed many times over the years. This year of 2021 will be hosted in Pakistan and will be themed 'Ecosystem Restoration'.
To see all dates, hosts and themes, see our table below (data from Wikipedia).
World Environment Day is an awareness platform on a global scale focusing on urgent matters such as marine pollution, sustainable consumption, animal crime and of course not to mention global warming. With over 50 years of landmarked history, the combined efforts of people and participating countries has allowed this movement to help repair and restore our ecosystems.
We celebrate WED on Saturday 5th June 2021 this year, the team at coconutbamboo.com will be reducing litter and plastic waste by collecting and recycling materials from our UK coastlines starting at Severn Beach, Bristol on Sunday 6th June 2021 going further south towards Devon and Cornwall over the next weeks and months. Special thanks to Surfers Against Sewage for sending us bags and gloves to carry out these tasks safely.
We will update our social media channels with our progress.
